on walking
I walk a lot everyday. It's satisfying. I’m not tracking distance. I’m not trying to burn calories. Most of the time, I don’t even know where I’m going.
Walking gives me the opportunity to think. It actually raises my awareness. There are things I could only notice when I’m not walking, not trying to notice anything.
There’s something amazing to me about simply being outside. It doesn't matter if its a bluebird day with the sun pelting on my skin. Or a cold, dark winter morning walk, where the air jolts me awake. I love walking in the rain and snow because I love the smell of the air and it forces me slow down. Whatever the weather, I'm walking. It often pulls my head out of my ass and into the world.
Walking with my wife (or dog (ideally both)) has become one of my favorite ways for us to spend time together. A post dinner walk as the sun is setting is not only good for your glucose but good for your soul. We can freely exchange ideas, be silly and play tag, or admire the beautiful life we chose together. I love walking in the morning when everyone else is asleep. I love walking after a long day, when I need to transition between going and resting.
It doesn’t solve everything more often than not it solves nothing. But yet the more I walk the better I feel. I'll never take it for granted.
